Charleston Basket Brigade

Helping Families in Need This Thanksgiving

Published November 07, 2019

This month, from November 1st – November. 21st, New Leaf Builders will donate one basket to the Charleston Basket Brigade for every agent who tours both Sea Island Hamlet and Village Park Mt. Pleasant. We know that this simple gesture can make a big difference to families in need in Charleston this Thanksgiving!

The Charleston Basket Brigade was started in 2008 by Michelle Scarafile and Pam Hartley, who sought to bring Thanksgiving meals to families who don’t have the means to bring a Thanksgiving dinner to their home.

Each family receives a box with all of the ingredients to cook an entire Thanksgiving meal including a 10-12 lb. turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes with marshmallows, fresh rolls, and a pumpkin pie. Also inside the box is an anonymous letter that reads,

This comes to you from someone who cares about you. All we ask is that you take care of yourself well enough to be able to do this for someone else one day.”

Carolina One and New Leaf Builders have long been supporters of the Charleston Basket Brigade, and the work they are doing year-round in the Lowcountry. This year, we want to help spread the word about this organization by donating one basket, which  would feed a family of 6, for every agent that comes to tour Sea Island Hamlet and Village Park Mt. Pleasant. We can’t wait to see what kind of impact this can make!

The below video from News2 last year shows the warehouse of food goods, which would end up going to feed over 3,500 families in 2018.

100% of funds raised by Charleston Basket Brigade are utilized to buy food for these families. Each meal is assembled and anonymously hand-delivered by CBB volunteers on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Since 2012, the organization has continuously raised over $100,000 every Thanksgiving. Over the past eleven years, the brigade has raised more than $750,000 and served almost 25,000 families in need with the help of thousands of Charleston volunteers and donors. They plan to match 2018, and are on a mission to again feed 3,500 families (approximately 21,000 people) in need for Thanksgiving in 2019.
