Setting Down Roots East of the Cooper

Mt. Pleasant History as Interesting as Its Present

Published January 07, 2021

Have you ever moved somewhere new and found it took a while to find your bearings and to feel truly settled?

That’s not an issue at Sea Island Hamlet, a neighborhood that connects its neighbors seamlessly to one another and to the vibrant town of Mount Pleasant. Strategically located in the center of everything, our community offers unique access to the area’s interesting history, activities, events and restaurants.

On arriving at Sea Island Hamlet, you may have immediately felt its “sense of place.” That’s by design, as the neighborhood blends modern, urban living with a touch of easy suburban amenities, like access to top schools and world-class healthcare, and more.

But you may not know the unique history of this former fishing village, which was truly a small town until not long ago. Look hard enough, and you may find Mount Pleasant folks who remember when the original bridge spanned the Cooper River to connect to downtown Charleston. In fact, the bridge was so terrifying to many drivers that professional escorts would offer themselves for hire, to successfully transport drivers across the span, working their way back and forth for hours a day.

The Old Pitt Street Bridge is a great park today, but once served as a trolley line to Sullivan’s Island.

Gold Bug Island is named for Edgar Allan Poe’s book The Gold Bug (but no, it doesn’t appear he wrote it on this spit of land).

If you’re new to town, you’ll want to download the Historic Society’s brochure. You can make it a virtual scavenger hunt by getting a “stamp” at each spot…the perfect winter activity for a still-distancing public. You can easily access many of these spots from Sea Island Hamlet, on foot or by bike.

There’s so much rich story telling in Mount Pleasant. And of course today it’s a modern place filled with excellent restaurants, energetic breweries, some of the state’s best schools, and enviable proximity to the nearby public beaches.

And remember, living at Sea Island Hamlet frees up plenty of time to enjoy all those amenities. Why rake leaves when you can bike to the farmers market or cast a line from the Pitt Street Bridge? Just remember, when you come home at the end of every day, you can sit back, relax, and plan tomorrow’s adventure in this fascinating place you call home.
